Volume 4 September 2017.

Compiled by Russell McMorran, Maurice O’Keeffe and Jane O’Keeffe

The publication of this 4th edition of the Old Kerry Journal in September 2017 coincides with the centenary of the death of Kerry patriot Thomas Ashe, whose private and public life is commemorated in this edition. In October, Tralee marks an important symbolic gesture by the Denny family in the installation of a stained glass window in St. John’s Church, Castle Street, Tralee. The artwork by U.K. based stained glass artist Tom Denny, will be entitled ‘The Reconciliation Window’. Russell McMorran’s fascinating piece on the Denny family features among the eleven articles in this publication.

This issue also features articles on Kerry connections to the Great War, and on the Troubles in Kerry. Also included is valuable information on William Lunham, a Scottish immigrant to Tralee possessed of extraordinary entrepreneurial skills.

The Journal remembers the work of Charles Graves, Bishop of Limerick, Ardfert and Aghadoe, who was an antiquarian, a scholar and an authority on Ogham stones.

In an article on Bishop Moore of Ballarat, Australia, we learn that a North Kerry priest and a most progressive clergyman became an inspirational personality in nineteenth century Australia. Reminiscences from beyond the walls of some of the Big Houses of Kerry are also explored.66 pages.
