Volume 5, Winter 2018
Compiled by Maurice O’Keeffe and Jane O’Keeffe

This newest edition of The Old Kerry Journal features a fascinating study by Russell McMorran of County Kerry’s links with the RMS Leinster disaster, the centenary of which was commemorated in October.

In keeping with previous editions of the journal, Maurice O’Keeffe documents an oral history recording about an aspect of Kerry’s rich history. More fascinating details of the Denny family are included in Volume 5 with Thomas Denny providing the historical background on some family artefacts and ephemera.

In this issue well-known Kerry historian, Mary McAuliffe explores female activism during the revolutionary period and Gerald O’Carroll untangles the complex system of kinship in seventeenth-century. Also included is an article by Donald Cameron who provides context for the eighteenth-century letters of Lady Theodosia Crosbie, three of which are faithfully reproduced in the Old Kerry Journal.

In an article by Martin Moore we learn about John Dwyer, a nineteenth-century emigrant from Listowel who became a pioneering policeman in the New Zealand colony. The Journal also provides the next instalment of ‘The Denny Diaries’ by Russell McMorran and Jane O’Keeffe explores some reminiscences from beyond the walls of some of the Big Houses of Kerry. 76 pages
