John Chadwick is a native of Templemore, Co Tipperary, and was reared by his bachelor uncle after his parents died. He joined the Irish Army at the age of 19, in 1939, when the Army was recruiting heavily. John recalls many of the exercises carried out by the Army during the Emergency Period. He later left the Army to take up a position as a salesperson in the crane business, at a time in Ireland when the building industry was expanding at a great rate. His recollections provide a valuable insight into both Army life and industrial life in Ireland during the middle decades of the 20th century.
