Tralee is the birthplace of Esther Greene. She spent a short time in Dingle following her father’s death and prior to moving to live in England with her mother. She entered the Mercy Convent in Tralee and her given name was Sister Marie Regina. She had always had a huge interest in music and attended UCC to study for a B.A. and B.Mus., studying under Prof. Aloys Fleischmann, who was to have a major influence on her life. She was one of a group of Mercy sisters who went to the USA to found a new centre there during her study period for her B.Mus. Thirteen years later she arrived back in Cork and later graduated with her B.Mus. She returned to the U.S.A. to teach with the Mercy sisters in Los Angeles, but in 1982 she was requested to return to Dundalk to study the documents of Vatican II. It was here that she met her future husband, Joseph Green.
