On a historic date in Irish history – 25th April 1916 – Michael Mullen’s father opened the doors of his new business in Oldcastle for the first time. Michael recalls his father’s drapery shop, and discusses the business, the involvement of seamstresses and tailors, fabrics, and the general running of a business at that time. He provides details of life during the Emergency, his schooldays at St. Finian’s and his return to Oldcastle in the 1950’s following his father’s death to take over the business. Oldcastle in the 1950s is recalled, with its Fair days, market days and pig fairs. He married in 1961, and in 1962 he established a furniture auctioneering business. He provides some fine anecdotes about buying and selling furniture down through the years.
