At the age of 14 years, Gaye Shipp finished her schooling to begin work at a lampshade company in Kells, run by the McNally sisters. She recalls the workplace there and her change of employment when her mother found her work at the local shoe factory. She went on to work in Mosney at Butlins Holiday Camp before emigrating to London in the early 1960s. She married John Shipp in 1964 and the couple returned to Kells when John found employment at Tara Mines in the 1970s, when many emigrants were returning. She has very fond memories of her paternal grandfather who was the local postman, a job which her father later took over.
