John Hume recalls his family’s background and his upbringing in Roscrea. He talks about the hardships of the Emergency period. In 1949 he started work on new legislation for the County Council in Tullamore (pensions for road workers). In 1972 he moved to the Midland Health Board and was involved in radiation protection. He worked at monitoring the fallout from the Chernobyl disaster and radiation in the radiology departments of Irish hospitals.
