Liam Handy’s cousins were Volunteers during the Troubles and his cousin Leo Handy was one of seven who escaped from Athlone Jail during the War of Independence, and fled to the USA. Liam recalled more stories of the Black and Tan War relating to the involvement of all his family. He told me a story about the shooting of a local landlord’s agent, and then showed me a flintlock pistol which had been used in the shooting. He told me that this weapon had been hidden in a thatched roof in a town cottage once owned by his aunt, who had told him the story. Liam spoke about many more interesting stories handed down to him by his father. This recording provided me with an amazing collection of stories, a valuable resource for future researchers.
