Rita Cahalane was born in Southpark, Ballingarry in the early 1900s. She was educated at the Sacred Heart Convent, Roscrea, by the Sacred Heart nuns, who had a great influence in the formation of her character. She had a huge interest in architecture and archaeology. When her father died she inherited Southpark.
