This recording was compiled in the course of a walk through Michael Kenny’s garden on the Drumree Road on the outskirts of Dunshaughlin. He started work in a butcher’s shop in 1944, eventually bought the business and worked at his trade for 45 years. He retired from the business in 2001. He recalls the late 1940s and 50s when he entered business, and the purchasing and handling of cattle. He says that in an average week during his career he would butcher three cows and 20 sheep. He opened a second butcher shop following the success of the original shop. Michael’s recollections of the town of Dunshaughlin and its people, places and pastimes are vivid and fascinating.
