Theme 1: The Shannon River

A return visit was paid to Thomas Donovan, along with a neighbour, Tim Hannon, who participated in the interview, Thomas begins by recalling local communications between Scattery Island and Beale. He then talks of the pier and the storehouse, buildings that no longer exist, and tells of the Oxford family who stayed in his grandfather’s house in the mid 1800s while work was being conducting on the Ordnance Survey of the area.

The children of the family attended the local school for one year. Thomas shows a rent book which was the property of Lord Listowel and reads passages from it concerning rents and debts owed by tenants to the Earl of Listowel, dating back to 1861.
