This recording begins with memories of the years of the Second World War in Berlin, where Jurgen Sassmannshausen was brought up. He and Helga married in 1964 and came to Wexford in 1971 to set up a home and business, and Jurgen provides the reasons why they chose Wexford as the location for their factory which produced miniature light bulbs. He describes how they became integrated into the Wexford community. They employed up to 60 people in the factory and they recall their terrible disappointment when in 1986 they had to close the factory and make all these people redundant. It is interesting to hear the couple comment on professionalism creeping into the Festival over the years – an example of this is the fact that the local chorus has now turned professional.
