From childhood Niall Sweeney, first Offaly born native to become Co. Manager of Offaly, took a great interest in the construction of the old roadways and bridges. He inherited his father’s enthusiasm for design. He qualified as an engineer and worked in the Midlands, in both Offaly and Laois, and was involved in designing the Laois bypass in 1982. This interview provides a first hand account of the progression of the Irish road system and its environmental impact.
