This account is told by Paddy Hughes, a man who was Chief Executive of Bord na Mona during difficult and good times. He grew up in Kilcoawan, Co Laois, and joined Bord na Mona in 1959 spending the next 49 years of his life with the company. He began as a stoker’s clerk, and in 1972 he moved to the transport and quality areas of the business. By 1973 he was in charge of the sod peat works in Timahoe, Co Kildare, subsequent to which he was appointed Managing Director.
