The sixth century monastic settlement on one of the Maharee Island, Co Kerry, is in an amazing state of preservation. The last family to leave the island were the Goodwins. Sean O’Dubhda, a folklore collector from the Conor Pass and Bob Goodwin from the Maharees, accompanied me to the island on St Patrick’s Day 1998, and we recorded the stories, folklore and history of the island.
