The site of the sixteenth century St Beircheart’s Church in Tullylease, now in ruins, is the location for this recording with Willie Larkin, Raymond O’Sullivan and Norma Bowman. St Beircheart, known locally as St. Ben is an early Christian saint. Each of the people featured in this fine recording brought to it their own area of expertise – Willie Larkin explains the niceties of the local lore, Raymond O’Sullivan is an expert on local history and Norma Bowman provides details of the rich archaeology in the area. Willie explains that Tullylease was the last place in Ireland in which Druidic pagan customs were practiced, until the arrival of St Bericheart. Near the ruined church can be seen a bullán which has always been known locally as the Hind Stone, which has a strong association with old beliefs.
