The end of an era occurred in Shinrone in October 1995 when Ryan’s shop in Lower Shinrone closed after 78 years of service to the village. Ryan’s shop was an institution in Shinrone. It was very much the pre-supermarket old style shop, selling groceries, draperies, shoes and many other goods. It was a family- run business over all those years and closed after the three Ryan sisters, Annie, Brid and May decided to retire. Many a good chat was had while sitting on the upturned tea chests opposite the counter.
